Emulate less than perfect analog FM


I’m wondering if anyone here has explored emulating less than perfect FM. I’m thinking of the FM I’ve heard from buchla systems where it seems things about to go out of whack due to what I’m assuming are variations in both oscillators… would it be as simple as to introduce imperfections in the oscillators?


VCOs tend to be a bit less stable in terms of pitch. These days with OB6 etc that is less true.

You want some slight detune added by a LFO or other modulator if you oscillators are stable.


Emulating… with what?

Have you tried making a similar patch digital hardware, and what were your conclusions? I’m asking because “things easily go out of whack” happens all the time when you have the slightest inconsistencies between the frequency ratios.
