Beads Density CV interesting behavior

I had never noticed this before: I’m sure someone else has mentioned it, but I post just in case someone hasn’t seen it.

Basically, if you want to use the full spectrum of the DENSITY knob, both left and right from center, set the knob somewhere between 11 o’clock to 1 o’clock.

If you want your +/- CV to JUST control one side of the DENSITY, then set it past 10 o’clock to the left or past 2 o’clock to the right.

I think the manual refers to it here,

When grain density reaches audio rates, the DENSITY CV input (5) applies exponential FM on this rate, with a scale of 1V/octave

I guess “audio rate” happens around 10 o’clock on the left side, and around 2 o’clock on the right?

Setup to see what I mean:

CV into DENSITY.

Density knob at 11 o’clock.
Positive CV causes the DENSITY to sweep from 11 o’clock to 5 o’clock,
Negative CV causes the DENSITY to sweep from 11o’clock to 7 o’clock.

Density knob around 10 o’clock.
Positive CV causes the DENSITY to sweep from 10 o’clock to 7 o’clock. Negative CV causes the DENSITY to sweep from 10 o’clock to 12 o’clock.

Yes, there is a crossfade around these points between these two behaviors:

  1. The CV is equivalent to physically moving the knob CW (positive) / CCW (negative).
  2. The CV is equivalent to transposing the frequency of the pulses/noise (that seeds the grains) with calibrated 1V/O scale.
